First, here are some key terms to help you understand the referral process.

HMO (Health Maintenance Organization):

  • Requires you to use a specific network of providers.
  • You must choose a primary care doctor (PCP).
  • Referrals from your PCP are typically required to see specialists.

PPO (Preferred Provider Organization):

  • Offers a network of preferred providers.
  • You can see any doctor or specialist within the PPO network without a referral.
  • More flexibility to choose healthcare providers.

If you have an HMO, we evaluate your labs and medical records combined with our clinical evaluation to make recommendations for specialist referrals. Our goal is to ensure you receive the right care at the right time. If you have a PPO, you do not need a referral and can make appointments with various specialists as long as they accept your insurance. If you need recommendations on providers in the specialty you seek, we are happy to help find a provider that is right for you.

Your lab orders will be available in your patient portal approximately 24 hours after your visit. Please check your portal for updates and follow any instructions provided. Getting your labs done helps us take a look at how your vital organs are functioning. This should be done soon after your first visit to ensure we get your results in time for your follow-up. Generally, our providers will not review labs over the phone or via the patient portal. It is expected for you to return to the clinic within approximately two weeks for a follow-up and to review those lab results. That time for your appointment is a dedicated time for you and your physician; make the most of it by coming prepared with things you want to discuss or your healthcare goals.

When a medical record request is submitted on your behalf, our standard processing time is between five and seven business days. This allows us to ensure that all necessary documentation is accurately compiled. For medical records needed in an urgent situation, we will endeavor to turn around those requests within two to three business days. However, please note that our standard processing time remains 5 to 7 business days.

For medication refills, please submit your request through the patient portal or contact our office. Medications that are controlled substances are regulated by the Department of Business and Professional Regulations (DBPR) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). As part of our commitment to providing the best care, controlled substances are monitored closely, necessitating regular follow-up appointments.

For new patients establishing care with our practice, lab results are required before we can submit a prescription, even if you have been on the medication for a long time. Our providers have the responsibility of conducting thorough due diligence to understand your healthcare journey. We do not circumvent this step at the patient's discretion. It is our obligation to ensure we have a comprehensive understanding of your health and well-being. Additionally, we will request your medical records for a complete review before prescribing any medication.

Urgent medication needs or requests will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. However, please note that our standard protocol for medication refills, as outlined above, is our default procedure.

For patient portal messages, please allow 24-48 hours for a response. We are committed to answering all your questions and concerns promptly.
